Capstone final project 1 & 2 at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The main goal of this development project is to evaluate the usability and user experience of a medical selfie application call ‘MyFootCare‘. Enhancing the user experience with peer support is undertaken in the second part of the project. The 13 weeks project include app compatibility testing, usability testing, user interview and producing high quality interactive prototype.

OVERVIEW
1 out of 10 people are affected by diabetes and people who are diagnose with diabetes especially diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are at risk of prolonged
healing times unless self care is performed by the patient properly, it will help reduce the wound size.
An application was created called ‘MyFootCare‘ to help mitigate these issues. The application features include taking foot ulcer size and monitoring their progress
SCOPE
In the previous research undertaken by previous team, the team found out that navigating and using the application was difficult for most of the users. That is the reason, evaluating the usability and user experience (UX) of the current mobile application ‘MyFootCare’, that is designed to take medical selfies of the foot and to also make design recommendations on how to improve the overall application with new features
DESIGN PROCESS
1. EMPATHIZE
USER RESEARCH
To gain more understanding on how diabetic foot ulcer patients, literature review in understanding the experience for people living with diabetic foot ulcers was undertaken including how promoting self-care and improving ulcer outcomes could improve foot recovery process
- User Interview
- Literature Review
- Usability Test
- Heuristic Evaluation
- Thematic Analysis
On top of the user interview and usability testing, participants will be required to answer open-ended questions which includes questions like:
- Describing their experience of the application?
- Their expectations upon completing the foot check task?
- The overall experience in the foot check process?
- Whether it was easy or difficult to locate the foot check records?
- Changes they would like to see implemented on the application and any other things they wish to bring up?
2. DEFINE
A total of 4 sprints was conducted. From the research data gathered, categorisation of the feedback and insights was sorted according on the recurrence of the problems.
3. IDEATE
To ensure a smooth transition, I created a clean, clear set of states and flows that displays every choice that was available on the application. This provided me with an overview of the entire project.
4. PROTOTYPE
See the high-res version Adobe XD prototype here.
5. TEST
On top of the sprints conducted, refinements were done progressively. Usability test and user interview with a podiatrist was coordinated to see the changes made on the application. A transcript was recorded and some of the mentioned include:
““This new feature (education) is useful and relevant for newly diagnosed patients. It can also be a preventive measure for diabetic patients because the chances for them to get diabetic foot ulcers is higher compared to non-diabetic patients””
— Podiatrist
Overall the scope of the project consisting of evaluating the usability and user experience of the current mobile application ‘MyFootCare’, that is designed to take medical selfies of the foot and to also make design recommendations with enhancing the user experience of a mobile health application with peer support was successful. Future development of the project will take place with testing the improved application with patients.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Reflecting on this year-long project has improved my user experience skill sets from performing thematic analysis, prototyping, user interview, usability testing and user research. I was glad that my previous project experiences have helped me pushed me further as a UX designer for this project. I was constantly trying to get the best outcome for each artefact in this project by learning new theories and solutions. As a UX designer, user research is one skill that one needs to equip themselves with and understanding diabetic foot ulcer has helped me empathise with their daily life struggles.
